3-Steps to Correctly Measuring Gravity

Improving Brewery Employee Training with a Blended Learning Experience

Problem

This brewery recently saw an increase in new and returning seasonal employees. While some of these employees had already been trained in measuring gravity, the goal was to create a comprehensive blended learning experience. In order to prepare new employees for in-person training, learners were required to complete a module that covered the procedure and purpose of measuring the gravity of fermenting beer.

Solution

Measuring gravity is a critical task that must be completed several times each week by all brew house employees. We decided on a microlearning module, which is both succinct and comprehensive. This approach accommodates both new employees and returning employees who only need a refresher. The eLearning experience was uploaded as a SCORM file to TalentLMS and assigned to employees through email. Upon completion of the course, a certificate is sent to both the employee and the instructor.

The Design Process:

Following the ADDIE Model with Increased Iterative Prototyping

After an analysis of the objectives, learner profiles, and the project timeline, we decided on a microlearning course that aligns with the necessary hands-on, in-person training. It was important to the client that minimal stock photos were used, so we incorporated timelining photo and video sessions in-house of the process. Since there is a follow-up module in the queue to be developed, the photo and video sessions were used wisely to acquire all necessary assets for this project and future projects.

Tools used:

Multiple prototypes were created as the module's overall design evolved into a clean, light look. The content focus was presenting a clear and concise microlearning experience that was relevant to all learners and immediately actionable. I achieved this by chunking the process into 3 distinct sections. The content is presented in various ways to maintain engagement and navigation throughout the course is intuitive.
